Prague’s open attitude towards foreigners and international business has been attracting many entrepreneurs and investors. The city’s advantages include: a good geographical position (with easy access to Austria and Germany, for example), low living conditions and a minimal amount of bureaucracy. Prague is a great opportunity to study in a Central European country with Western education standards and an international friendly crowd.
The winters are relatively cold, with average temperatures that reach freezing point, and with very little sunshine. Summers are mostly sunny and the average high temperature is around 24°C (75°F). During spring and autumn you should expect sudden changes, so most times you will have to carry an umbrella with you.
Student housing options available in Prague include
1. Student halls of residence – the most common and usually the cheapest type of accommodation. If you considered halls of residence, better book one room in advance, as the number is limited. The price for rent is around 140-160 EUR/month.
2. Private apartment or shared house – the price for this type of accommodation varies depending on location, facilities or number of bedrooms. The average rent price for a room in a shared flat is between 300 and 350 EUR/month.
3. Homestay – the ideal choice for students interested in learning or improving Czech language and also understand the Czech life style and culture. Usually living in a host family is more expensive, you would have to pay around 470 EUR/month, but most of the times at least one meal/day is included.
4. Hostel – usually a more expensive option. Decent hostels located in or outside the city centre have average prices of 23 EUR/night.
Prague is not an expensive city, the cost of living is not as high as in Western Europe. Your monthly expenses would count for around 450 EUR, including accommodation, food, public transport, and going out).
Supermarkets all over Prague have reasonable prices and the monthly food bills would cost you around 70 EUR/month. Lunch in a restaurant you would have to pay 5-7 EUR for one meal course. A monthly public transport pass is 20 EUR.
