Studying Master of Engineering

The Master of Engineering (M. Eng. or ME) is a postgraduate Master's degrees that is achieved for a studies in one of the engineering sciences. The study duration of a Master of Engineering programme differs. There are 1-year as well as 2-year Master programmes offered. According to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) on average 30 credits each semester have to be achieved. A one-year programme has therefore typically 60 ECTS, a two-year programme 120 ECTS accordingly.

The Master of Engineering is academically equal to the Master of Science and Master of Arts. It is however common practise to award the Master of Engineering for rather practical oriented programmes at universities of applied sciences, whereas engineering programmes at universities are awarded with the Master of Science (M. Sc.).

Due to the numerous possibilities for specialisations in the area of Engineering there are further degree types such as the Master of Science in Engineering (M.Sc. in Eng.), the Master of Business Administration and Engineering (MBAE) or the Master of Business Engineering (MBE).

Studying in Portugal

Portugal is one of the most popular countries for study exchange programmes and many universities are active members of the Erasmus program. Portuguese universities are both focusing both on providing valuable theoretical knowledge and on engaging students in prevalent research projects. Many universities are affiliated with several research centres and they have been contributing to more than 1% of the world's highly cited publications.

M.Eng. Electrical and Computer Engineering

The Master in Electrical and Computer Engineering (MEEC) has the mission of training professionals that will develop activities and/or research that are integrated within the productive fabric and constitute as drivers of innovation, thereby contributing to wealth creation by transforming and modernizing economic activity.

Department of Electrotechnical and Computer Engineering
M.Eng. Biological Engineering

A Biological Engineer resorts to its background training in Biology, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Engineering to find solutions to technical and scientific problems in interface areas between Biology with Engineering.

Department of Bioengineering
M.Eng. Chemical Engineering

Chemical Engineering is a branch of engineering that combines knowledge in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Engineering Sciences with a view to carry out research, conceive, project and operate systems that transform chemical substances in final products through chemical, physical and biological processes, in a context of economic, social, ethical and environmental constraints.

Department of Chemical Engineering
M.Eng. Aerospace Engineering

The Integrated MSc programme in Aero-space Engineering (MEAer) is a synthesis of the cutting-edge technologies that distinguish the 20th century, which are materialized into different types of vehicles, such as airplanes, helicopters, robotized aircrafts, spaceships and satellites.

Department of Mechanical Engineering
M.Eng. Information Engineering

The Master in Information Engineering (MEINF) aims at offering specific formation in the generation, distribution, analysis and use of Information in engineering systems. MEINF educates engineers to be able to design, build and test engineering systems centered in information and knowledge processing. Students will learn to design, analyze and implement mathematical models to be applied to complex systems of the industrial or corporate world, and to create efficient strategies to optimize their performance. Throughout their training, students will acquire both the theoretical and methodological tools which will be applied in all fields of engineering, with applications in economics, environmental sciences, life sciences, and other domains.

Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto
M.Eng. Biomedical Engineering

Biomedical Engineering uses the tools os engineering to analyse and solve key challenges in fundamental medicine and in the clinic, and applies advanced technologies to the complex problems of health systems. The masters program in Biomedical Engineering at IST is coordinated by the Department of Bioengineering. The course is a partnership with the School of Medicine of the University of Lisbon.

Department of Bioengineering
M.Eng. Civil Engineering

The Integrated Master Programme in Civil Engineering seeks to offer sound and overarching training, allowing students to be highly adaptable throughout their professional life, according to the needs of the contemporary market, which will result in a high degree of qualified employment after they leave the IST.
