Find out more information about Environmental Studies & Earth Sciences

Environmental studies cover a wide interdisciplinary area, which investigates how the natural world works and how humans interact with it. Bachelors and Masters in Environmental Studies approach environmental issues such as pollution, global climate change and depletion of natural resources. Environmental sciences try to find sustainable ways to maintain or improve the integrity of the natural environment.

Earth sciences deal with the study of our planet, its material structure, atmosphere and physical characteristics. Specialised fields of the discipline include geology, meteorology, oceanography and even astronomy.

Both environmental studies and earth sciences integrate knowledge of physics and biochemistry to study environmental systems, study the history of earth and its constant changes, and try to find solutions for pressing environmental issues. Sub-disciplines of environmental studies and earth sciences include toxicology, biodiversity and conservation, soil science and environmental management. Environmental studies also incorporate social sciences for understanding human relationships, perceptions and policies towards the environment. Environmental and earth scientists perform experiments and take accurate measurements related to how the earth's characteristics and environmental issues evolve and change. They work on subjects like understanding earth processes, weather changes, natural hazard prediction, alternative energy systems research, natural resource management and more.

Graduates find work in government agencies, non-profit organisations or environmental consulting agencies. Careers in the field range from hydrologist, geographer or seismologist, to environmental compliance inspector, climate change analyst and emergency management specialist.
