The discipline deals with art or science and is based on the application of scientific knowledge to practical problems. In general, undergraduate and graduate programmes in applied sciences use fundamental scientific principles to innovate new technologies. Therefore, applied science plays an intermediary role between the basic science such as physics or chemistry and engineering practices. Similar to the conceptual framework of applied sciences, applied professions and art programmes deals with the application of design and aesthetics to functional objects we use every day.
Fields of engineering are closely related to applied sciences, which is vital for technology development. Studies in natural sciences provide students with a strong foundation in the sciences upon which engineering fields are built. Students have the opportunity to broaden their horizons by using an interdisciplinary approach. Strong engineering background supported by solid knowledge in basic sciences equips graduates with many skills that would contribute to their success in careers in academia or in industrial settings. In industrial settings, applied sciences are usually referred to as research and development (R&D).
