The discipline is based on the application of existing technology within a field of engineering through the use of basic engineering principles and technical skills. As such, undergraduate and graduate programmes in the field focus primarily on the applied aspects of science and engineering to equip graduates with practical technical skills in product improvement, manufacturing, construction or engineering operational functions.
Studying engineering equips students with practical skills to acquire and apply scientific, mathematical, economic, social and practical knowledge to design and build structures, machines, devices, systems, materials and processes that safely serve as a solution to the needs of society. Combined with knowledge and processes related to technology, programmes in engineering and technology field provide students tools and skills to manipulate materials so to shape and change the physical world to meet needs. Through hands-on training, students are encouraged to come up with creative applications of scientific principles.
New technologies are introduced continually, and existing ones become obsolete almost as soon as they appear. The challenging field of computing communication and networking technologies is considered a major topic for most recent curriculum studies in IT. The rapid evolution of the discipline has a profound effect on Information Technology education, affecting both content and pedagogy.
This two-year programme aims to make its attendees experts in the fields of digital image and distributed real time systems. While the first year consists of a common core focused on fundamentals of both fields, courses of the second year are oriented towards two specialisations: one in digital imaging, covering topics of image analysis, computer vision, and image synthesis with equal importance, the other on distributed real time systems, with a special emphasis on software issues and networking. During the second year, students are required to conduct a research or development project with either a company or a laboratory in France, or in another foreign country.
The aim of this programme is to provide skills that are relevant to business and first-class training through a unique international partnership between two internationally renowned business schools - Audencia and MIP Politecnico di Milano in Italy - and their network of industry partners.
After the program, students in the DSS track should not only understand and be able to use large distributed systems but they should be capable of designing and constructing such systems and services deployed on such infrastructures. The program emphasizes a combination of fundamental principles of distributed computing with modern methods of software systems design.
The Professional Masters' Program is structured as an extensive and applied formal education program for participants desiring a career in the Information Technologies area. Seniors, new graduates, and those professionals planning a major change in their career track are thus suitable candidates for this program.
SENSE is a program for students who wish to develop their skills in innovation and entrepreneurship in the exciting field of Smart Grids. This programme is unique because of its focus on the innovation process closely connected to developing new business within the electric power area.
Software technology and engineering together with information systems are experiencing a major paradigm shift towards digital, software intensive services. Internet connectivity and the Web accompanied by sensor networks drive ubiquitous merging of the physical and virtual worlds of all human activities and interests resulting in data excess. These developments bring new major challenges: On the one hand it is a challenge to build software systems that cope with the emerging extended technological infrastructure. On the other hand, it is a challenge to organize the myriad of opportunities for new software applications and information systems on top of it. New aspects on the service model and distribution are the social computing, e.g. Web 2.0, peer-to-peer interactions and mobile, location and context aware services as well as various forms of cloud computing. All in all, this paradigm shift may further lower the barrier for new market entries and offers possibilities for new innovative businesses. F
This programme will train graduates to become internationally-focussed project managers working at the interface of Management and Technology. Students will develop the necessary technical skills along with expertise in strategic issues and project management in order to manage Information systems in diverse contexts.
The Master of Science in ICT Strategic Management (MUSIM) was created on merging two pioneering international groups within the university, the ICT Department (listed amongst the top 100 in the world in the Shanghai Ranking '09) and the Economics and Business Department (first in the Tilburg Economics Ranking'08).
This Master programme is a continuation of the Bachelor studies as a first step towards the PhD. MICS starts with an orientation meeting where all new students get to know the professors and other students.
