The overall aim of the programme is to give trainees the knowledge and skills to work with a range of different client groups using a range of different models in the National Health Service.
The Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Edinburgh is one of the longest-established courses in the UK. It offers a wide range of teaching and clinical placements with trainees being attached to one of nine possible Health Boards throughout most of Scotland.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of training, you will be eligible for chartered clinical psychology status with the British Psychological Society and, therefore, for employment as a clinical psychologist in the NHS or other organisations. The degree awarded is the DClinPsychol, which is a practitioner doctorate.
The emphasis in training is a competencies-based model of learning in which trainees learn to apply psychological knowledge in a range of clinical settings and with a range of client groups. The Clinical Psychology Training Programme has also started to develop an online component to the course. Online resources and materials have been developed for the Learning Disabilities and Older Adults specialities and provide a supportive resource for trainees to complete training placements with these client groups.
Trainees are paid on a Trainee Clinical Psychologist Scale (currently under review) through a Lead NHS employer.
Currently there are two training models for the DClinPsychol programme, a three-year full-time training programme and a flexible four- to five-year training programme. The length of the flexible training programme is configured to meet both the local employer´s service need and professional accreditation requirements.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
