This programme aims to develop your interest, knowledge and understanding of the theory, practical techniques and research relating to the science of transplantation and transfusion medicine.

For example:

* How is blood processed?
* When do we give platelet transfusions?
* How is tissue engineering being used to replace heart valves?
* What causes haemolytic anaemia?
* How do we reduce the transfusion related risk of HIV and vCJD?

Contents

The MSc programme consists of five units. A, B and D are taught through informal lectures, interactive tutorials and assignments. Transfusion and Transplantation in Practice (C) is a course of practical work and hands-on demonstrations in research and service labs in Bristol. The research project (E) allows you to plan, execute, analyse and write up an original investigation as a thesis under guidance from a supervisor.

For the award of MSc, a pass in all units is mandatory. For the award of Diploma, a pass in units A, B, C and D is mandatory. For the award of Certificate, a pass in units A, C1 and D1 is mandatory.

Units

* A: The Principles of Transfusion and Transplantation Science The scientific principles that provide the foundation of transfusion and transplantation science. Includes lectures on the molecular genetics of blood groups and the structure of antibodies.
* B: The Application of Transfusion and Transplantation Science Applied aspects of contemporary clinical and laboratory practice used in service provision and research. Includes lectures on blood processing and how antibodies cause transfusion reactions.
* C1 & C2: Transfusion and Transplantation in Practice Uses Bristol's status as a centre of excellence for service provision and research in transfusion and transplantation sciences. Comprises laboratory placements with hands-on experiences recorded in a logbook.
* D1 & D2: Research Methods and Biostatistics The principles of experimental design, including basic and intermediate statistical methods required to interpret published data and analyse new data generated from research. Includes sessions on presenting scientific data, writing grant applications and project management.
* E: Research Project Three months of supervised research, undertaken by full-time students at Bristol and by part-time students in their home institution. Enables the students to develop an understanding of the principles of biomedical research and scientific method.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Entry Requirements

Minimum upper second-class degree in Biological Science, Medicine, Dentistry, or equivalent overseas qualification. Lower second-class or non-degree qualifications may be considered if proof of relevant laboratory experience and other academic achievement is provided.

Language Requirements

An IELTS score of 7.0 with at least 6.5 in all bands. We also accept other language tests; please see our website for details.
