The MSc in American History harnesses the expertise of the Edinburgh Americanists and the resources of Edinburgh libraries in order to offer students the chance to explore a large range of topics in the field.
The MSc provides an introduction to advanced study in American history both to students who plan to embark on doctoral work and to students who simply want to spend a year pursuing in more depth intellectual interests developed as undergraduates. This programme is distinctive in its breadth and diversity, both chronological and thematic. It draws on the wide range of American historical expertise available in the School of History and Classics.
The programme offers a challenging academic experience, particularly for those who wish to combine a smallscale research project with specialist methodological, theoretical, historical and historiographical training. Its objective is to help candidates attain a level of expertise and knowledge that will enable them to embark upon independent research at an advanced level in American history.
Students who follow this programme will be able to:
* develop an advanced knowledge of topics in American history through a range of core and module courses;
* gain familiarity with key historiographical debates and modes of historical explanation;
* show an understanding of advanced historical methodology and the ability to evaluate successfully evidence through the close study of relevant primary and secondary sources;
* acquire training in the discipline of rigorous historical argument;
* demonstrate the ability to conceive and execute a coherent project in historical research and writing;
* amass the necessary research skills for starting doctoral work.
This programme is taught through a combination of small-group seminars and tutorials, one-to-one supervision and private study. You will be examined through coursework and a dissertation totalling approximately 30,000 words.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testA very good first degree - at least 2:1 honours level, GPA 3.4 or equivalent - in History or a related discipline is normally required.
