Classics – (M.Sc.)

This programme aims to introduce students of Ancient History, Classical Archaeology/ Art and the Languages (Greek and Latin) to an advanced study of Classical Civilisation/ Culture. It takes advantage of the wideranging and complementary expertise of members of staff in Classics in order to provide an interdisciplinary curriculum.

The modular structure of the MSc in Classics allows you to concentrate on areas of particular interest but will still provide breadth of coverage. All students take training courses, first in general postgraduate skills, and then in Classical Methodologies, which help prepare them to pursue their own particular interests. The 14 members of the Classics subject area at Edinburgh profess an exceptionally wide range of expertise in Greek and Latin literature, Ancient Philosophy, Ancient History, and Classical Art and Archaeology. The unit has particular strengths in material culture, Hellenistic culture, and Late Antiquity.

Learning Outcomes

Students who follow this programme will gain:

* advanced knowledge of the archaeology/ art and history of specific regions and periods of classical civilisation;
* an opportunity to study and analyse the literary significance of Greek and Latin texts and develop knowledge of current interpretation of them;
* an ability to comment in a detailed manner on passages from a selection of Greek and Latin;
* a developed knowledge of the Greek or Latin languages.
