The Hellenistic age, which roughly spans the years from Alexander the Great to the death of Cleopatra, was a period of significant transformation in the Eastern Mediterranean. Recently there has been a considerable increase in scholarly interest in Hellenistic studies.

The MSc in the Hellenistic World takes an interdisciplinary approach, drawing on the wide range of expertise in this area in the School of History and Classics.

The programme is designed to develop:

* knowledge and understanding of the Hellenistic world and the central issues of Hellenistic scholarship;
* an ability to assess critically research on the Hellenistic world, employing where appropriate, insights, theories and methodologies from a range of disciplines;
* an understanding of the interaction between source material and interpretation;
* an ability to present the results of research with a clarity which combines argument, narrative and a knowledge of evidence and methodology;
* the necessary research skills for students proceeding to doctoral work.

Contents

The course is taught through a combination of small-group seminars/tutorials, one-to-one supervision and private study. All students take training courses, first in general postgraduate skills, and then in Classical Methodologies, which help to prepare them to pursue their own particular research interests. The course is examined through coursework and a 12-15,000-word dissertation.
