Our Master of Science in Economics gives you professional skills and an advanced understanding of economic and finance problems, both from a theoretical and an applied perspective.

Our program prepares you for highly-skilled jobs in the private sector or in governmental agencies, in Portugal or abroad, requiring solid quantitative and analytical skills, and provides a sound foundation for an academic career in economics if that is your choice. The aim of the Program is to provide you with the knowledge and skills necessary to take up specialist positions in the public or private sector or to pursue an academic/research career via a PhD.

MSc in Economics is a full time program, Monday to Friday, focused on newly qualified graduates yet to start their career with little or no professional experience.

The program structure is quite flexible and the study plan can be tailored to suit both applied and more research-oriented profiles.

The MSc in Economics requires 120 ECTS:

It will usually take you four semesters to complete the Program, although you may wish to work more intensively and finish it in three semesters.

General Electives

Every year CATÓLICA-LISBON will put together a set of electives in Economics or Business and Administration taught by our faculty staff or by invited lecturers from prestigious schools or by top executives with interesting professional experiences.

Leadership Lab 3 ECTS

Common Law Contracts (8 ECTS) and Economics of the Legal System (2 ECTS) are available under the Group of General Economics Courses for the Major in Law and Economics.

Major

If you have a 1st cycle degree in Economics, and you want to specialize in FINANCE, the program offers a Major in this field.

If you prefer a more general economic approach, choose our ECONOMIC POLICY option and you will get an overall understanding of regulation and competition issues in several sectors, public economic issues or macroeconomic policies.

If you prefer to diversify your economic basis with courses that will help you to discover the legal context and the way economics can be used to analyse rules and legal practice, chose the major in LAW AND ECONOMICS.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.

Requirements

First cycle degree equivalent to 180 ECTS. Transcript of records confirming academic qualifications (Portuguese or English).

For application purposes we do not require a formal certificate from your School, but we do require a non official document with ALL the courses you attended and its grades (You may print this information from your students' personal webpage).

We will require a formal certificate after completing your degree and no later than November (for September intake) and April (for February intake).

Certified proof of english proficiency:

  • TOEFL (recommended score): 600 (PBT), 250 (CBT), or 100 (IBT)
  • IELTS: (recommended score): 7.0
  • CAE: a minimum of C
  • or take the CATÓLICA-LISBON English Test

GMAT or CATÓLICA-LISBON Admission Test for applicants with a background different from Business and Economics.

Please note that your degree should have at least 50% of quantitaive courses.
The admission jury may request this exam from applicants with a background in management or economics if they decide that is justifiable
