The programme seeks to provide a wide-ranging and inclusive understanding of modern British history. It aims to provide a foundation for those who may wish to consider doctoral research.
The course draws on the wide range of British, Scots and Irish historical expertise available in the School of History, Classics and Archaeology.
It also offers the opportunity for students to concentrate on themes in modern British political, social and/or economic history.
Learning Outcomes The taught MSc/Postgraduate Diploma provides methodological, theoretical, historical and historiographical training. Students will be given a wide-ranging training in the skills of the discipline together with the opportunity to choose and pursue more specialised areas of study.
Students will gain:
* a specialised knowledge and understanding of modern British and Irish history;
* a detailed knowledge and understanding of the central historiographical issues of these areas;
* an understanding of the interaction between historical sources and analysis;
* an appreciation of the historical and historiographical context of the student's individual area of research within the modern British and Irish fields;
* a range of transferable skills, such as precise oral and written communication, independent study, problem-solving and time management.
The programme combines a range of tutor and student-led seminars, and incorporates a research project resulting in a dissertation.
Though some classes are compulsory, there is an element of individual choice in the programme.
You will be examined through coursework and a dissertation totalling approximately 30,000 words.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testFor entry to the programme, a first degree performance at 2:1 honours level or its equivalent is normally required. The MSc in Modern British and Irish since c.1600 is a full-time programme taken over the course of one academic year.
