How does the brain work? Significant progress has been made in the field of cellular and molecular neuroscience. Modern in vivo techniques have revolutionized non-invasive observation of brain activity even in humans. Today’s challenge lies in understanding the brain as a complex and functioning system. This new master program in Neurosciences is supported by the Elite Network of Bavaria and embedded in the Graduate School of Systemic Neurosciences, which provides state-of-the-art training with nationally and internationally renowned professors. Key focus areas include systemic neurosciences, molecular and cellular neurosciences, computational neuroscience, and neurophilosophy. Modular seminars in secondary skills such as scientific writing, presentation skills, and time management supplement the core curriculum and help to prepare students optimally for their future career goals.
Year 1 - Basic Training
The first year of the Master program aims to mediate basic knowledge in the main areas of systemic neurosciences: systemic neurobiology, molecular and cellular neurobiology, sensory physiology, neurophilosophy.Students with a biological, medical, psychological or similar background, will repeat the mathematical skills needed to follow the computational neuroscience. Students with an engineering, physics, or mathematical background will receive extra teaching in comparative anatomy and evolution of vertebrates, to bring forward their contact to biology and animal systems.
Year 2 - Advanced Training
Building up on the fundamental principles learned during the first year of teaching, students have the chance to develop individual core themes. The complementary skills courses, intended to improve employability even beyond research, will also be part of the second year.
Computational Neuroscience is obligatory for all students. Beyond this students are free to build their own program and choose from a variety of lectures, seminars and practical courses. It is advisable to discuss the choice of courses with your personal mentor.
Research Projects:
One of the central aspects of our teaching concept, is to give students a large proportion of hand-on research experience. Next to the various practical courses, an individual research project is required in each semester. For a period of 4 - 6 weeks students work on distinct projects in one of our affiliated labs. Students are free to chose a working group of their particular interest. These research project will convey skills needed for succesful research work:
* literature search, defining the current state of knowledge, relevant to the individual project
* methodology
* data analysis
* data visualization - from raw data to an explanatory figure
* introduction to scientific writing
The research projects offer a great opportunity to get aquainted to different research groups within our network. We also encourage students to do one of their research projects at another university or even in another country. Applicants for the ENB supported Master Program "Neurosciences" must hold a BSc or equivalent degree in biology, psychology, medicine, physics, philosophy or related fields.
Applications are welcome even if the required degree has not been awarded by the time of application, as long as this will be conferred before courses start in October.
Applicants who are non-native English speakers are strongly encouraged to demonstrate adequate knowledge of the English language through acceptable results in an internationally recognized test (such as TOEFL or IELTS ).
