The programme aims to provide students with the intellectual environment, background, training and support, which are essential for the conduct of critical historical enquiry.

The taught MSc/Diploma in the Second World War in Europe (History) is distinctive in its focus on a major event involving a great variety of countries in the 20th century.

The programme provides a satisfying academic experience for those who wish to study the impact of the Second World War on civilians in belligerent, occupied and neutral countries.

You will follow seven courses: two compulsory courses common to all History MSc degrees; four thematic courses designed for The Second World War in Europe; and an individual dissertation.

Learning Outcomes Students who study this programme will be able to demonstrate:

* a specific body of advanced knowledge;
* an understanding of advanced historical methodology and the ability to evaluate evidence through the close study of relevant primary and secondary sources;
* familiarity with historiographical debates and modes of historical explanation;
* the discipline of rigorous historical argument;
* the ability to conceive and execute a coherent project in historical research and writing.


Contents

You will be taught primarily in seminars. You will be examined through coursework and a dissertation totalling approximately 30,000 words. A supervisor will be assigned for your dissertation.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Requirements

For entry to the programme, a first degree performance at 2.1 honours level or its equivalent (3.4 GPA for North American students) is normally required. The MSc in the Second World War in Europe is available both as a full-time programme taken over the course of one academic year, or as a part time programme taken over two academic years.

* TOEFL 580 (with 55 in each section and 4.0 in TWE)
* TOEFL 237 in CBT (with 21 in each section)
* TOEFL-iBT 92 (with at least 20 in each section)
