The MA in Independent Film, Video and New Screen Media: Theory and Practice offers a much-needed trajectory into the study of film/video and new screen media in London . This programme offers a unique combination of structured learning and student-driven modules, allowing creative linking of theory and praxis, and of historical and new horizons of experimentation and innovation.
The programme encompasses a nurturing and ambitious environment, which will assist new developments in production and diffusion, as well as in the formal and technological aspects of work produced. The programme should also, over the years and with its eventual maturation, leave its mark on the area of film, video and new media production, by educating a large and influential group of producers, with a profile somewhat different from elsewhere, and with issues which represent that difference. This will introduce new issues, procedures and priorities which should emerge over the next few years, and which will grow out of the teaching, learning and production experience gained on this programme of studies.
Film, Video and New Screen Media at UEL
The proposed MA programme exploits the large and influential body of Film, Video and New Screen Media Practitioners and Historians/Theorists based at the UEL, within the Schools of Cultural and Innovation Studies, and Architecture, Art and Design, and the immense potential of the Docklands site. The wide range of cultural production work covered, ranging across Avant-garde work, through independent production, documentary and animation work, and including new screen media technologies and practices, sets this unique programme aside from other programmes currently on offer. The Combination of staff from both Schools provides the most impressive group on any MA programme on offer, in London or elsewhere
Contents
All students taking the MA Film, Video and New Screen Media programme will do the two core modules, one option, the research methods and approaches module and the Project/Thesis module. Projects and Theses are submitted at the end of September. An MA in Film, Video and New Screen Media will be awarded on successful completion of the whole programme (180 credits). Learning environment
The programme will include teaching in lectures and seminars, production and research workshops, and screenings. It will rely heavily on the independent work of students. The learning experience is based on confronting students with theoretical and practical examples, and with leading practitioners in Film, Video and New Screen Media, and the need for each student to work out their own production preferences in the light of this knowledge.
Assessment
Programme assessment is normally by seminar presentation, screening of work, essays, research projects and a practical project or theoretical thesis, which may include a production component. There are no exams.
Relevance to work/profession
This programme is offered in the context of growing numbers of graduates from BA (Hons) Film and Video and Media Studies/Production programmes across the UK, with little postgraduate offering in those areas. The programme offers a unique educational and training experience for graduates, professionals, artists and researchers, combining traditional and new areas of Screen Media production and diffusion, and allowing for Student-centred learning. There is no programme in the South East offering just that, or with a similar line-up of personnel. Its location in a high-tech campus, and the variety and richness of staff involved, will make this a unique programme.
A recent Skillset Audio-Visual Industry Employment research has indicated the following growth in numbers of people employed in the industry:

This is clear proof of the great number of professionals in need of further study and development. During this period, the provision in London has not grown, but somewhat declined, with the closure of the Royal College of Art programme option. This clearly demonstrates the potential of this new programme.

Applicants will normally have a first or upper second class degree or equivalent in a humanities or social science subject, or comparable professional or research experience. This MA aims to recruit from a wide variety of backgrounds, and not just from film and media studies graduates: the arts, humanities and social sciences, as well as the new technologies. We also aim at recruiting practitioners with established work, who wish to develop and evolve an advanced critical understanding, in a supportive and challenging academic environment. The programme provides UEL graduates, and graduates elsewhere, as well as industry professionals, with an opportunity for high-level, empowering academic programme of studies.
Applications from overseas and EU students are welcome. Students whose first language is not English should normally have achieved a score of 7.0 in IELTS (International English Language Testing System) or equivalent. Eligibility for students without a degree-equivalent qualification will be assessed on the basis of short essay and statement. Wherever possible, applicants will be interviewed by a member of the programme team in order to assess whether they are able to achieve the standard of work required for the award. Overseas students will be asked to supply evidence of written and production work of a standard sufficient for successful postgraduate study in lieu of an interview.
