This interdisciplinary 2 years taught Master of Chinese Studies (MCS) programme offers a unique opportunity for you to meet your career aspirations .
A challenging but rewarding intensive language programme combined with six months of study at the prestigious Nankai University will equip complete beginners with very good oral and written communicative skills after only two years of study.
Combined with a broad range of options in all aspects of Chinese politics, economy and business, society and culture you can tailor your studies according to your specific interests.
Six months spent in the booming city of Tianjin, a newly designated Special Economic Zone, will provide ample opportunities of cultural immersion, and of gaining global perspectives and cross-cultural competences.
While interacting with a committed and international community of PG students you will become part of a network of China related activities in business, culture and education throughout Scotland.
The joint University programme will give you access to specialised expertise, research facilities and resources of both institutions in Edinburgh and Glasgow.
In Edinburgh, you will enjoy the beautiful cosmopolitan capital of Scotland, increasingly committed to a stronger engagement with China defined as key strategy by the government.
Finally, the Confucius Institute for Scotland in the University of Edinburgh facilitates various interactions with key sectors in government, business and education engaged with China.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of the programme, you will:
* be able to speak, read, write and understand Chinese (Mandarin);
* have a good knowledge of modern Chinese history, society and culture, and advanced knowledge of modern politics, economics, business or management;
* be able to communicate this knowledge effectively in speech and writing;
* have completed a dissertation on a topic related to contemporary Chinese politics, economics, business or management.
Taken over two years of full-time, intensive postgraduate teaching and study, this Masters in Chinese studies students with no prior knowledge of Chinese language to achieve a strong foundation in
Modern Standard Chinese (Mandarin) and in aspects of contemporary Chinese society, economy, politics and business.
For students with prior knowledge of Chinese special language tuition will be arranged.
Each module is taught and supervised by experts in the respective fields from two of the leading Universities in the UK. You will work in a small group of international students from a broad variety of disciplines committed to apply their experience and competences on a new area - China.
The first year will keep you busy with a intensive language programme taught in Edinburgh and 4 core courses in Society, business, politics and economics . You willalso take part inresearch skills training and special preparation for doing research in China.
You will then continue your language study in China over the summer and term 1 of the second year at Nankai University, one of the most prestigious universities in China with well established links to Edinburgh University. In the city Tianjin, where Nankai is located and which has just recently been designated as a new special economic zone, provides ample opportunities to engage with contemporary China and immerse in its rapid transformation.
To ensure your smooth adaptation to the new environment each cohort of students is visited in China by a staff member of the programme.
While continuing your language programme with a focus on business Chinese after your return for term 2of year 2, you can choose your specialisation from a broad range of option in economics, business, politics, media, literature and culture.
The final step of the programme is your dissertation written over the summer of year two. You can chose a topic in one of the areas taught in the programme and will be supervised by the specialist in this area.
Finally, you will graduate in the autumn of year two.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testApplicants for the postgraduate Master of Chinese Studies are normally expected to have a good honours degree or equivalent. A background in the social sciences and some knowledge of China are helpful but not a requirement. Language learning ability is useful. In the absence of these qualifications, employment or other educational experience showing evidence of intellectual ability of an equivalent standard will be considered on an individual basis.
Students applying from overseas should note that the Universities require evidence of an adequate standard of English. International students will normally be required to produce evidence of an appropriate score in an accepted English test:
IELTS 7.0 (with at least 6.0 in each section)
TOEFL 600 (with 55 in each section plus 4.0 in TWE)
TOEFL 250 in CBT (with 21 in each section plus 4.0 in TWE)
TOEFL-iBT 100 (with at least 20 in each section)
CPE Grade A
