Edinburgh is one of Europe's most beautiful and friendliest capital cities: a lively, cosmopolitan cultural centre and a great place to study. It is home to numerous theatres (including Scotland's major new writing theatre, the Traverse), and of course to the Edinburgh International Festival and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. With all the opportunities these festivals bring, as well as its wealth of galleries and cultural institutes, Edinburgh has a lot to offer students of theatre.
As part of its postgraduate programmes, the University of Edinburgh offers a taught MSc in European Theatre. The programme is designed to combine wide-ranging study of the major movements in European theatre with detailed analysis of the most important drama texts. The course is taught on a full-time or part-time basis.
Students will be encouraged to attend theatre productions in Edinburgh, and may be offered workshops by the playwright in residence or by a visiting theatre director.
The course extends over 12 months (MSc) or 9 months (Diploma) and consists of
* Course Work in the first semester (September-December) and in the second semester (January-March), and
* A Dissertation of approximately 15 000 words, or an essay of approximately 4000 words for Diploma candidates
Course Work
Comprises of three elements in each semester:
* Research Methods course. This course offers training in basic research skills, with a specific focus on research for theatre studies. In addition to database and archival skills students will be made aware of referencing procedures, issues around publishing and dissemination, various methods of analysis, and basic requirements for essay and dissertation production.
* Core course: Key Developments in European Theatre. Extends over both semesters
* Option course. Students will be required to choose one Option for each semester.
Please note: Texts are studied in English on the core course and in English unless otherwise specified on the Options courses.
