This vocational MSc is a well-respected course that trains graduates to become professional ecologists. Teaching covers the full range of practical ecological skills including biological surveying, protected species monitoring, habitat creation and restoration, mitigation, environmental impact assessment and project management. Emphasis is placed on providing field experience using site visits.
This MSc has been specially designed to create ecologists with just the right mix of specialist knowledge, field skills and business training to make them immediately attractive to a wide range of employers. Past MSc graduates have found jobs with British Waterways, the Environment Agency, Exmoor National Park, the Forestry Commission, Natural England, Scottish National Heritage and the Wildlife Trusts, as well as with a wide variety of British and overseas NGOs and private sector organisations.
The programme comprises three taught Units and an individual research project. The three taught Units are progressive and cover essentially very different aspects of the work of the professional ecologist:
Unit One
Application of ecological principles to practical ecological management.
Unit Two
Practical matters in ecological field work, including surveying, monitoring, habitat creation and management, and environmental impact assessment.
Unit Three
Foundation for professional practice, including environmental law, ethics, report writing and project management.
Individual Research Project
This is carried out on a topic of the student's own choosing and is intended to contribute useful knowledge to the improvement of professional ecological practise. The project takes place during the second year of the MSc.
Teaching on this MSc is provided by professional ecologists working both within and outside the University. You will learn from their first-hand experience of wildlife management, conservation and environmental appraisal. Teaching methods include lectures, field trips, group work and seminars and include basic principles, practical applications and case studies.
This MSc differs from other MSc courses in its part-time teaching format. Teaching takes place in short intensive blocks spread over two years, with background reading and assignments in between. This part-time arrangement allows students to hold full-time jobs while studying.
As the field of professional ecology is fast-moving, this MSc programme is continually being updated to reflect recent trends and developments. For further information please see our website.
