The integration of computers, communications and electronics is now being realised. Their use will profoundly affect the way in which we learn, work and use our leisure time. Distance learning, home employment, remote manufacturing and tele-surgery are but a few of the opportunities offered by the information superhighway and its multimedia infrastructure.
This programme aims to introduce you to the most important aspects of networked applications, databases, servers, legal issues, security issues, and cryptography. Graduates will be equipped for a wide variety of employment in the computing industry and wider fields such as commerce and banking. The programme will also give you the knowledge and experience to continue studying for a PhD, or to enter a career in research.
In the introductory week you will take a programming proficiency test and will be placed in either an 'experienced' stream or a 'foundation' stream.
First Semester
Students on both streams must complete four core units:
* Information Security
* Introduction to Cryptography
* Law and IT
* Mobile and Ubiquitous Computing
Students on the foundation stream must complete one additional core unit:
* Programming in C
and students on the experienced stream must complete two additional core units:
* Algorithmic and Economic Aspects of the Internet
* Introduction to Machine Learning
Second Semester
Students on both streams must complete two core units:
* Advanced Cryptography
* Project Specification and Design
plus three units from a range of options:
* Databases
* Object Oriented Programming with Java
* Server Software
* Web Technologies
Summer
You must complete a final MSc project which consists of researching, planning and implementing a major piece of work. The project must contain a significant scientific or technical component and will usually involve a software development component. This is usually submitted by the end of September.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
