The first Integrated International Master and PhD Program in Mathematics, established at TU Chemnitz with the support of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), leads through four semesters to a worldwide recognized Master's degree of science and after six additional semesters to PhD. The study path is particularly meant for students from Eastern Europe and the developing countries who have often no chance to aquire the doctorate in their own country. The faculty also wants to encourage German students to get the Master's degree and additionally the doctorate. Master's degree corresponds in the view of qualification level with a diploma in mathematics. An additional component of international study path is given by the offer of English lectures in mathematical subjects. Thus students are introduced to the English mathematical terminology and learn to follow English lectures and practices as well as use themselves the English language in discussions. Such language skills are nowadays essential for mathematicians in science and research as well as in economy, as e.g. articles in international mathematical journals are published almost allways in English. Another advantage is the work in an international team of students.
The Master and PhD Program in Mathematics as professional and research qualifying studies are preparing German and foreign students for vocational activities as mathematicians in scientific and application-oriented working areas. In particular the scientific abilities will be educated in this case. Very good fields of application are e.g. in industry research, technology centres and software offices. The complexity of spheres of activity spreads from automobile and chemical industry, CIM and robotic towards medicine, biology, insurances, banks, up to transport and communication.
The studies are organized in two phases:
1st phase (master - 4 semesters)
2nd phase (doctorate - 6 semesters)
During the first phase 58 SWS in basic and special parts of mathematical education plus at least 12 SWS in the subsidiary subject are to be proved.
Master Program
For foreign students there is a collateral language course offered in their semester of matriculation (only in the winter semester) to learn the German language, which can be finished with the acquirement of a certificate after an examination. Basic knowledge in German language is advantageous, but not a condition. A part of the lectures are offered in English. However foreign students should focus in the first semester on learning the German language. So beginning with the second semester of their studies they will be able to follow some German lectures, too.
During the third semester there is taking place, apart from the consolidation of the general mathematical basics, a specialization within one of the following six areas. There are possible course offers in every mentioned special subject. More lectures can be added.

Furthermore the master course comprises a fundamental education in a nonmathematical subsidiary subject from the offers of the faculties of natural sciences, mechanical and process engineering, electrical engineering and information technology, computer science and economics.
The Master examination constitutes the profession qualifying conclusion. It consists of a Master thesis and examinations in the subjects of pure mathematics, applied mathematics, specialization and the subsidiary subject.
