The Bristol Department of Classics and Ancient History stands at the forefront of both traditional and innovatory studies of ancient texts, images, cultural concepts and philosophy. Highly rated for its original research, the Department ranks amongst the best in Britain and enjoys an international reputation, particularly in the specialisms of myth and religion; reception and the classical tradition; history and historiography (with particular strengths in Late Antiquity and the ancient economy); visual and material culture; literary and critical theory; Greek and Roman literature and intellectual history.
The MA programme draws on the Department's strengths in four key areas: Myth, Tradition, Identities and Histories. The programme aims to develop interpretative skills across a wide range of materials reflecting your own individual interests, while rigorous training in research methods offers you an overview of different theoretical approaches to the study of the ancient world.
The Bristol MA is uniquely tailored to suit your own interests, allowing you to follow a programme of study that best meets your own interests and needs - whether you are taking the MA as preparation for future research, preparation before embarking onto a PGCE, or as a final postgradaute degree. You have the option of studying ancient languages at any level (inclusding intensive beginners' Latin and Greek), you can choose from a wide range of subjects, and you will complete an independent piece of research under expert supervision in a topic of your own choice.
