The MA in Documentary Practice is appropriate for students from any background or discipline who wish to develop and enrich their abilities in making documentary work. It is not a basic primer, and assumes that you are functionally competent in the technical aspects of the medium in which you wish to work. While key areas of the MA focus on moving-image screen-based forms, the programme actively embraces and supports work in other forms, including photography, writing, audio/radio, web-sites, site-specific installations, and live performance. You may specialise in any one of these for your dissertation project
You will develop awareness of core debates in the field of documentary and the intellectual, industrial and cultural environment. You will be guided in developing your own practice, and have the opportunity to enrich your understanding through the optional units on offer. You will then have the opportunity to produce a complete documentary project in your chosen medium, as the major component of the dissertation.
The University of Bristol has distinguished traditions in documentary study and practice across a range of media and forms, with expert scholars and practitioners working on the programme, a wide network of alumni at the forefronts of their fields, and strong relationships with the international community.
