Location of University of Bristol

This programme combines a sound historical and theoretical introduction to maritime archaeology through lectures, seminars, site visits and practical experience. Individual units familiarise students with archaeological investigations, interpretation and management of maritime heritage sites while emphasising interdisciplinary approaches and current debate. Collectively, course and fieldwork provides a basis for a professional career in maritime archaeology and heritage or further research at PhD level.

The University is within walking distance of the Floating Harbour at Bristol, one of England's most historic ports. The city rose to international prominence during the medieval period, and was a key location in the development of the Atlantic world during the 17th and 19th centuries. Beyond Bristol, the harbours, wrecks, preserved ships and maritime museums of south west England provide a rich focus for teaching and field experience, from the prehistoric and Romano-British periods through to the 20th century.
