Location of University of Bristol

The Diploma is primarily intended for graduates of any subject wishing to obtain a qualification in Philosophy or merely to acquire an informed understanding of the subject. The aim of the Diploma is to bring students to a postgraduate level in Philosophy in one year.

Conversion to an MA within the period of registration for the Diploma can be considered if you consistently achieve high marks in the programme.


Contents

First Semester

* Epistemology and Metaphysics Seminar

A two-hour weekly seminar studying core topics in epistemology and metaphysics. This unit is examined on the basis of an essay of 5,000 to 6,000 words

* Philosophical Writing and Research Seminar

A two hour weekly seminar developing bibliographical, writing and ideas-managing skills necessary for advanced work in Philosophy. This unit is examined by written work and seminar contribution.

* Two optional units

Two optional independent study units in each of which you will attend a course of lectures selected from those available in the second- and third-year undergraduate programme and will write an extended essay on the relevant subject matter, supervised by the lecturer.

Second Semester

* Value Theory

A two-hour weekly seminar studying core topics in moral and political philosophy. This unit is examined by an essay of 5,000 to 6,000 words.

* Two optional units

Two optional independent study units in each of which you will attend a course of lectures selected from those available in the second- and third-year undergraduate programme and will write an extended essay on the relevant subject matter, supervised by the lecturer.

* Extended Essay unit

Student-directed work on a philosophical topic chosen with advice from the programme director.

IELTS

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Entry requirements

Normally an upper second-class Honours degree or equivalent in any appropriate subject.

Language requirements

An IELTS score of 6.5 in all bands. We also accept other language tests; please see our website for details.
