Location of The University of Edinburgh
The programme aims to provide students with specialist education in finance and investment. It will give a global perspective on investment markets and asset classes, provide practical and theoretical knowledge on the processes and mechanics underlying investment, and build on students´ existing numerical skills so that they are able to understand and practice investment-related mathematics.
This programme is global, practical and numerical in nature, and these themes differentiate ours from rival programmes. Our unique selling point is the University of Edinburgh´s strong relationships with finance and investment businesses. We have been able to create a number of internships for students and provide dissertation and project ideas from industry.
Learning Outcomes
Students will gain knowledge of global financial markets and the finance and investment industry - how different organisations interact, their roles, and factors behind success or failure. Students will learn how to estimate the fair value for an investment, to test assumptions and sensitivities, and to compare different investments. Students will gain an understanding of the role of different asset classes, their behaviour in isolation and in relation to other asset classes, and an understanding of how portfolios of investments can be constructed and analysed.
Intellectual skills developed will include: critical analysis; research skills; discipline in decision making; analytical and numerical skills. Subject-specific skills developed will include: an understanding of investment and risk management tools and databases; an understanding of industry practice in risk management; an ability to understand, speak, and write the language of finance and investment; and an ability to analyse financial statements of multinational firms. Transferable skills developed will include enhanced numerical skills and fluency in spreadsheet use, developed through problem setting in quantitative courses within the programme.
Successful completion of this programme will prepare students for a range of finance-related professions, including investment analysis, portfolio management, financial statement analysis and evaluation, corporate finance, product development, client servicing and risk management.
Contents
The MSc in Finance and Investment consists of:
* Seven core (compulsory) courses
* Three optional courses, selected from a choice of up to seven options
* A dissertation
Core courses in first semester: * Financial Markets
* Investment Mathematics
* Statistics for Finance
* The Analysis of Corporate Financial Information
Core courses in second semester: * Corporate Finance
* Derivatives
* Research Methods in Finance and Investment
Optional Courses
Students select three options from the following list. Please note that not all optional courses may run in a particular year.
* Behavioural Finance and Market Efficiency
* Cases in Finance and Investment
* Portfolio Management and Investment Analysis
* Equity Valuation
* Ethics and Corporate Governance
* International Accounting
* Public Sector Financial Management
Conditional on passing all first and second semester examinations, you will write a dissertation of approximately 10,000 to 15,000 words on the subject of your choice within the finance and investment field.
Dissertation
A dissertation will be undertaken during the summer on a topic of the student´s choosing. The submission date is late August.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

The entry requirement is normally an Honours degree from a good university, with an `excellent´ or `very good´ classification, in which the subjects studied include finance, accounting or economics.
Applicants with an Honours degree in a non-related subject will also be considered, but they will need to demonstrate a very high standard of ability and motivation for the programme. Relevant work experience will be an advantage, especially for applicants with a degree in a non-related subject.
UK 2:1/1st honours degree or an equivalent overseas qualification, for example:
* Canada - mid B+; 3.3+ (4 point scale); 7.3/8+ (9 point scale)
* China - 80-85%+; B+
* Germany - 2.5+ (reverse 5 point scale); Sehr Gut/Gut
* India - 1st Class degree (60%+)
* Nigeria - 2:1
* South Africa - 2:1/1st
* USA - GPA 3.25+ (4 point scale)
Other equivalent qualifications can be requested from the Admissions Team. If your application is otherwise complete, a conditional offer can be made pending a final degree result and/or language test result.
English LanguageFor applicants whose first language is not English, there will be an English language requirement as follows:
* Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
* Paper based TOEFL - Overall score of 600 or above (with scores of at least 55 in each section and a score of 4.0 in essay writing)
* Computer based TOEFL - Overall score of 250 or above (with a score of at least 21 in each section)
* Internet based TOEFL - Overall score of 100 or above (with a score of at least 20 in each section)
* International English Language Testing System (IELTS): Overall score of 7.0 or above (with a score of at least 6.0 in each section)
* Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE): Grade A
No other testing systems are acceptable as equivalent scores.
Applicants whose first degree (of at least 3 years) is from an English speaking university will be exempt from the language test. Applicants in this situation may be interviewed.
Applicants whose first language is not English but who can prove their education was conducted in English must upload a letter or statement from their institution stating that English was medium of instruction as well as assessment throughout their first degree otherwise you will be required to take the language test.
