This MA provides the opportunity for you to design an interdisciplinary postgraduate programme to suit your own interests and needs. It gives you the opportunity to work comparatively across arts and humanities disciplines in a structured way.
You will learn how an understanding of reception transforms our approach to study in the arts and humanities, through a sustained engagement with critical theory. You will be equipped with a set of theoretical 'tools' for understanding the factors - historical, cultural, material; gendered, raced, classed; technological, linguistic, and semiotic - which determine how audiences make sense of artworks.
In the core units you will receive a thorough grounding in interdisciplinary critical theories of reception, enabling you to bring an informed perspective to the optional units you choose from across the whole Faculty of Arts. These will allow you to develop your individual interests further through comparative work or by specialising in a particular discipline or period.
The degree has been designed as an introduction to graduate research in the arts and humanities. It is also suitable for students who want to pursue an interest in the issues raised by theories of reception.
First Semester
* Core unit in Theories and Methods
