The programme attempts to understand the political processes of Africa by using the concepts, theories and methods of comparative politics (political sociology and political economy) and international relations. The empirical evidence from Africa will test the applicability and limitations of the analytical toolkits of comparative politics and international relations beyond the North American- European confines from which they are largely derived. The combination of courses studied will enable students to develop deeper knowledge of how political problems are analyzed as well as knowledge of the region itself. Through the dissertation, the programme will also offer candidates the opportunity of conducting independent research based on the analytical foundations learned from their taught courses. The analytical and case knowledge derived from the programme will facilitate entry into various types of professional employment and into further research.
All MSc Politics programmes are based on the student taking three examined courses and writing a 10,000-word dissertation.
