The impact of Christianity on society can be felt around the world - in international politics, economy, arts and cultural ideologies. The opposite is true as well. Christianity and society thus mutually shape and guide each other, with implications for the lives of people everywhere in the world.
In this Master's program you will study this complex interaction from both sides: how Christianity influences society and how society has an effect on the tenets, organization and practices of Christianity.
Why study Christianity and Society?
* We offer an interdisciplinary program with lecturers from different Schools, including theologians, sociologists, economists, law specialists and philosophers;
* Classes are are set in a stimulating environment, including high-level philosophical questioning, contrasting perspectives and historical insights;
* The program offers excellent preparation for senior positions in religious and church organizations, in government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), in the social and economic sphere (e.g. advisor or manager) and in the media.
Full-time and part-time study
You can complete this Master’s programme in one year full-time study or two years part-time study (part-time study is only available for EEA/EU and Dutch students).
The program consists of 8 modules each of 6 credits (ECTS) and an MA thesis of 12 credits, leading to a total of 60 credits. One ECTS credit represents 28 hours of study. The program is conducted over one year full-time, with the option of part-time study conducted over two years.
Three main sections comprise learning: Fundamentals, In Dialogue With (during which you have the option of swapping the prescribed curriculum for an MA elective of your choice) and In Conclusion.

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

* A Dutch academic bachelor's degree or an equivalent (international) qualification, for example two years of philosophy and four years of theology at any (inter)diocesan seminary.
* If you have a bachelor's degree from a non-university institution of higher education, you will need to complete a pre-master's program (only offered in Dutch) to be eligible for this program;
* While a previous degree in theology is not mandatory, a basic knowledge of Christianity is presupposed. A reading list is available to improve your basic knowledge of Christianity and theology.
English proficiency
International students are required to demonstrate proficiency in English in one of the following ways (the test must be less than two years old at the time of application):
* Academic IELTS (min. 6.5 overall / 6.0 on parts)
* TOEFL (min. paper based: 575, computer based: 233, internet based: 90-91). The TOEFL institutional code for Tilburg University is 9860.
* Cambridge Proficiency Examination
You are exempt from an English test:
* if you are a native English speaker, i.e. if you are a citizen of one of the following countries: Australia, Canada (with exception of Quebec), Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom and United States of America.
* if you completed all your secondary education in English. This only applies to scholars from the following countries: Australia, Canada (with exception of Quebec), Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom and United States of America.
* if you completed all your university education in English. This only applies to scholars from the following countries: Australia, Canada (with exception of Quebec), Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom and United States of America.
* if you have an IB or EB diploma with English as the language of instruction.
