This programme aims to equip you with the technical knowledge and practical skills required to carry out research and development in the challenging interdisciplinary arena of speech and language technology.
Taught by leading researchers from Linguistics & English Language, the Centre for Speech Technology Research and the School of Informatics, this programme combines elements of linguistics, computer science, engineering and psychology.
Learning Outcomes You will acquire the knowledge and develop the skills needed to address current issues in speech and language technology.
Students will learn about state-of-the-art techniques in speech synthesis, speech recognition, natural language processing, dialogue, language generation and machine translation.
Students will also learn the theory behind such technologies and gain the practical experience of working with and developing real systems based on these technologies. This programme is ideal preparation for a PhD or working in industry.
Contents
Students take two semesters of taught courses combining a set of core subjects with a wide choice of options. This is followed by a project and dissertation in which the student carries out their own piece of original research.
IELTS
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

An undergraduate degree in linguistics, computing, engineering, psychology, philosophy and mathematics or equivalent relevant experience. We do not require a high level of computing skills for entry to the programme but do expect students to be willing to learn. The computational element varies depending on your choice of courses, and can be tailored to those with a strong computational background or to those with none. In addition to the supporting documents requested on the application form, candidates are asked to submit a personal statement.
English Language Requirements
* IELTS 7.0 (with at least 6.0 in each section)
* TOEFL 600 (with 55 in each section plus 4.0 in TWE)
* TOEFL 250 in CBT (with 21 in each section)
* TOEFL-iBT 100 (with at least 20 in each section)
* CPE Grade A
