Sociology has never been more relevant for an understanding of the modern world. This programme offers you the opportunity to extend your core sociological knowledge and understanding. It also serves to consolidate familiarity with the discipline for those coming from related subject degree backgrounds, but without specialised knowledge of sociology.

The key learning goals are the development of critical use and comprehension of social theory, a grounding in methodologies and techniques of enquiry, and a focus on distinctive, substantive sociological topics, such as ethnicity, multiculturalism, gender, sexuality, religion and culture. The dissertation gives you the opportunity to pursue a sociological project of your choice in greater depth, while still providing close academic supervision.

The Department of Politics, Department of Sociology and Centre for East Asian Studies recently merged to create a new School within the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law.
