This programme interlocks with Bristol's world-leading research into the gendered character of world politics. It examines and deploys perspectives from feminism, gender studies, cultural studies, and sexuality studies, in conjunction with inter-disciplinary research in international political economy, civil-military relations, international development and the study of men and masculinities.
Core units will prepare you for a wide choice of options, and you will be included in the workshop programmes given by visiting researchers and associates. Students writing essays and dissertations are encouraged to bring the 'gender lens' to bear on contemporary issues in international development, security, conflict and militarisation. This unique programme was launched in 1998 with personal and continuing support from international feminist scholars, and it also has ongoing contact with leading researchers into masculinities and military sexualities.
The Department of Politics, Department of Sociology and Centre for East Asian Studies recently merged to create a new School within the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law.
Contents
The MSc programme lasts 50 weeks (October to September). It comprises six 12-week taught units, six assessed essays followed by a dissertation.
First term
Three mandatory units:

* International Security or International Political Economy
* Theories of International Relations
Second term
Three optional units from a list supplied during the academic year. Topics vary each year but may include:

* Development Skills in Practice
* Environmental Politics
* Europeanisation

* Gender and Development
* Managing and Evaluating Development
* Masculinity / ies and International Relations
* Militarisation, Militarism and War
* The Politics of AIDS in Africa
* Religion, Fundamentalism and Conflict
* Research Methods
* Small Business Development
* US Security Policy
Third term
Independent study for dissertation
IELTS
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.

Entry requirements
An upper second-class Honours degree (or equivalent qualification). Degrees from all disciplines are considered. In exceptional cases we will consider offering Diploma entry, aiming for upgrade to MSc, for applicants with a lower second-class Honours degree.
Language requirements
An IELTS score of 6.5 with a minimum score of 6.0 in the writing band. We also accept other language tests; please see our website for details.
