The Graduate School of Education offers a one year programme for graduates leading to the award of a PGCE. It caters each year for well over 250 students training to teach in secondary schools. Usually two-thirds are graduates of universities other than Bristol. The programme is approved by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) and leads to recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status. OFSTED has rated the programme as grade "A" in the new quality categories. OFSTED grade profiles for all individual subjects currently exclusively comprise grades 1 and 2 in all inspected areas.
The programme is a minimum of 36 weeks in duration and starts in early September. Its structure may be most conveniently described in terms of three major components, though the timetable and approach underline the intention that they are strongly interrelated. These are:
* Curriculum Studies - main subject specialism
* Education and Professional Studies
* School Experience
Main Subjects
The main subjects offered are:
* Citizenship
* English
* Geography
* History
* Mathematics
* Modern Foreign Languages
* Music
* Religious Education
* Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics)
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testEntry requirements
Prior to admission to the programme, all students are required by the Department for Education and Skills to have:
* At least GCSE / 'O' Level at Grade C or an equivalent qualification in English and Mathematics
* A degree or an equivalent qualification in a subject relevant to the proposed main teaching subject
