Overview

Applied Mathematical Sciences offers you s a clear and relevant gateway into a successful career in business, education or scientific research. The programme arms students with the essential knowledge required by all professional mathematicians working across many disciplines. You will learn to communicate their ideas effectively to peers and others, as well as the importance of research, planning and self-motivation.


Contents

Core courses include:

* approximation of continuous systems;
* dynamical systems and applied linear algebra.

There are many options available in such subjects as:

* mathematical modelling;
* mathematical biology and medicine;
* optimization;
* PDEs;
* statistics and stochastics;
* scientific computing;
* engineering mathematics;
* management;
* software engineering.

Some of the courses include mini-projects and give training and practice in mathematical and statistical software tools, report-writing and presentation skills.

The main MSc project uses these skills and offers the opportunity to work with leading researchers to examine application based problems.

Typical projects cover a broad range of areas such as Cryptography, Host-parasitoid interaction in space and time, Models of consumer behaviour or Vortex dynamics.

IELTS

You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.

Requirements

Preferably, but not exclusively a First or Second Class Honours degree in a suitable numerate science or engineering subject.

English language qualification

If your first language is not English (and your first degree was not taught in English) then you will have to take an English language test. If you have already taken such a test before you apply for a place then please include the certificate with your application form. Otherwise any offer of a place we make will be conditional on satisfactory completion of a suitable exam.

The minimum entry requirement is one of the following:

* TOEFL (OLD version) 550
* TOEFL (NEW computerised version) 213
* IELTS 6.5
* Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English, Grade C

Other tests may be acceptible but you must contact the postgraduate office regarding this.
