These courses prepare you for work in the fashion design or fashion-related industries.
Career and progression opportunities
Graduates are employed in prestigious fashion houses, for example, H&M, Max Mara, Chloe, Balenciaga and Burberry.
Other alumni including Emma Cook, and Stevi Jelbart and Emma Sandham-King of Ophelia Fancy have established their own companies and design labels.
Most graduates work as designers, buyers, merchandisers, stylists and trend forecasters. Others go on to postgraduate study at MA or doctoral levels.
Course structure
Year 1 is common across the BA(Hons) and MDes integrated masters-level qualifications. You will develop the technical skills of fashion design, including pattern cutting, draping and garment manufacture, while exploring the cultural and commercial contexts of fashion.
In year 2 BA(Hons)/MDes design projects will broaden your knowledge of different fashion market sectors. Projects are diverse and will test your design skills. You will develop your communication skills, and build a body of design work and garment samples to add to your portfolio. You may also complete an optional industrial placement year following year 2.
With academic guidance, you will negotiate which final award suits your study needs during year 2. If aiming for the BA(Hons) award, in your final year you will design and make a collection of market-specific outfits for either womenswear or menswear. You will also produce a professional portfolio of design work, a dissertation and business plan.
Alternatively, if aiming for the masters-level MDes award, over years 3 and 4 you will complete an industrial placement module, and formulate an in-depth personal research question from which you will produce a collection of garments or develop an alternative fashion product. This could be art direction of your own magazine or the design of a product for an industry that requires specific clothing knowledge.
