The Digital Music and Sound Arts course addresses the important role of sound in contemporary culture. Designed to expose students to the employment of sound across a wide spectrum of aesthetic forms and in diverse technological media, it lays particular stress on the relation of sound to other art forms.

Students will gain a strong foundation in sound practice, including an understanding of acoustics, studio technique, sound design, sound diffusion, audio production, new media applications and interactivity. The course will combine practical experimentation in both music and sound art with theoretical reflection and contextual research.

Career Prospects
Together with the many transferable skills taught, the course will provide an excellent foundation for careers in the Arts, Education and the Creative Industries, including sound, music, film and video production, sound art for galleries and public spaces, the games industry, radio, television, internet, the performing arts, sound design and music-composition for the stage, etc. Previous graduates have gone on to work in BBC, Radio 5 Live, Warp Records, West-German Radio, Beijing Olympics, etc.

Contents

The course offers three main areas of study, with a solid grounding in the area of organised sound:

1) Sound for the Moving Image – addressing screen-based sound (Sound design and composition) work for film, video, internet and television. 2) Sound Art – addressing sound in relation to other art forms, such as sculpture, installation art, photography, architecture, performance art, environmental art and radiophonics. 3) Sound & New Media – addressing sound in the context of digital media, such as generative composition and interface design in the domain of new media technologies, such as computer games, internet and mobile media. Teaching
The lecturers in the Digital Music and Sound Arts course are specialists in diverse practical and academic fields, with strong research backgrounds.

Visiting lecturers, typically specialist practitioners, complement permanent staff by covering specific topics. Through the course’s national and international contacts we periodically run guest lectures by outstanding sound practitioners enabling students to gain insights into the current practices and standards in the field. Our curriculum includes lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials, field trips and extracurricular events - organised by students and staff.
