This course offers students the freedom to cover a breadth of subjects relevant to the field, with a balance between academic rigour and application of scientific concepts. A key element of the course enables students to work alongside experienced practitioners in areas relevant to their interest. This experience allows students to apply the knowledge gained in other modules and to develop their professional abilities.
Suitable applicants would be sport and exercise science graduates wishing to retain breadth in their academic development, graduates from related sciences who wish to move into the sport and exercise science field or further education lecturers wishing to gain professional development.
Career and progression opportunities
Chelsea School graduates have gone on to careers in physiological support strength and conditioning coaching, higher education and research.
Course structure
Taught material is currently delivered on a Wednesday to facilitate study by part-time as well as full-time students. The taught material is split between lectures and seminars/laboratory work. Around 80 per cent of study time is in the form of projects, independent study or a range of directed study tasks. The Professional Enquiry module is undertaken by all students and provides the opportunity to work alongside experienced practitioners in areas relevant to the student's interest. All students also study the Health and Performance Profiling and Research Methods. Students also have the opportunity to choose two modules, such as Exercise Metabolism and Environmental Stress or Exercise Policy and Prescription, from a choice of at least four allowing them to specialise in an area of personal interest. .
Areas of study
The subject areas covered draw predominantly on sport and exercise physiology, and exercise psychology, with opportunities also available to study sport psychology and sport and exercise biomechanics.

Degree and/or experience:A good honours degree (typically 2:1 or above) in sport or exercise sciences, or a relevant science-based degree such as psychology, physiology, biochemistry or zoology. Graduates in more fundamental sciences such as chemistry, physics and mathematics may also be acceptable. Applicants without the minimum qualifications may also be considered, providing they can demonstrate they have the appropriate background by other means.
