The International Centre for Brewing and Distilling (ICBD) is a unique teaching and research facility. The centre is based on a partnership between industry and academics, and makes up part of the School of Life Sciences located in the Riccarton campus of Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh.
The ICBD is the only organisation in the UK to offer both Honours and Masters degrees in Brewing and Distilling. As such, the centre not only supplies the industry with new-blood graduates, but with services, expertise and facilities consistent with the standards required in the local, national, and international markets. A variety of courses are available both on campus and by distance learning and short courses and workshops are catered for on request.
The course comprises twelve modules, eleven of which are compulsory. Students with a background in a biological science complete the course with two management modules (Production Management and Basics of Business).
Students with an engineering background complete the course with the module Introductory Biochemistry/Microbiology, and only study a single management module, Basics of Business.
The period of study is a minimum of 2 years, and a maximum of 7 years. Single modules may be taken, for which a certificate is awarded on completion. Completed individual modules can also be credited towards the Diploma.
Successful completion of the entire course will lead to the award of a Diploma and exemption from the Diploma in Brewing Examination of the Institute of Brewing & Distilling.

Assessment and examinations
Assessment is by a mixture of course work, project work and examinations. Written work is marked by a tutor, and detailed commentary on each assignment is given as feedback for future work.
Examinations are held twice a year in June and December. The deadline dates for examination applications are 1 April and 1 October for the June and December diets, respectively.
Examination centres are established in local approved centres, if possible. Generally examination centres are based at local universities, British Consulates or other authorized locations.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
