The discipline of project management has become central to the management approach adopted by numerous UK and international industries. From the construction and property industries to the major financial institutions, from information processing to heavy industry, there is growing recognition of the benefits that project management can bring.
As markets become more competitive, organisations in the construction sector and their clients are increasingly demanding the combined time, cost and quality assurances that good construction project management practice provides. This course equips students with the skills, knowledge and expertise necessary to meet these demands. Its delivery is also industry facing and an innovative and novel way for students to study, learn and attain a high level post-graduate qualification.
The course is uniquely structured as attendance-free distance learning, and takes three years to complete on a part-time basis. It has been specifically designed to tailor for the busy professional keen to further develop their knowledge, expertise and careers. The course is therefore highly sensitive to students in highly demanding jobs and to ensure that they can manage, combine and draw their learning from within the context of their work commitments. This avoids the need for students to take study breaks to acquire further qualifications. Career development in the workplace is not interrupted by following a work-based distance learning programme of study.
Modules are delivered mainly through the web, with facilities for students to interact with colleagues, staff and other students. There are also benefits for the employer, who will be able to take advantage of the work-based projects by putting them into practical use within the organisation.
The course is delivered jointly with Loughborough University - another leader in the field of Construction Project Management. This course therefore draws strength from the reputation of both institutions for delivering high quality Masters courses within the UK. It also benefits from their significant expertise and experience of delivering education and conducting industry relevant research.
Options are available for Diploma and Certificate levels to suit individual student needs and circumstances. Students can start the course in January or September. Notably, the course is currently only open to UK/EU students and substantial bursaries are currently available for UK students.
The following compulsory modules (not all of equal weight) are delivered by Heriot-Watt University and Loughborough University and form the taught element of the course:
