Overview

This masters programme covers the advanced mathematics that has revolutionised finance since the works of Black and Scholes and of Merton in the early seventies. The revolution continues to this day and this programme is aimed squarely at those students who are passionate about mathematics and driven to make a career amongst the many and varied financial institutions throughout the world.

The programme, which is part of the Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences, the joint research institute of mathematical sciences at the University of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt University, provides an intensive training in the mathematical ideas and tools vital to the finance industry. By developing essential new mathematical concepts, especially in stochastic calculus, and placing the mathematics in the contexts of financial markets, modelling, derivative pricing, portfolio theory and risk management, the course equips students for a range of lucrative and exciting career opportunities.

Requirements

The course is an advanced degree in the mathematical sciences. It is essential to have achieved, or be expected to attain, at least the equivalent of a UK upper second-class degree in your undergraduate degree, which must be in mathematics or a very substantially mathematical subject (for example statistics, physics or engineering).

Degrees in Business, Management, Economics or Finance are unlikely to meet this entry requirement. In particular, degrees in these subjects which include only standard courses in mathematics and statistics for management school students are not sufficient.

English Language Requirements

If your first language is not English you need to show that you would benefit from studying in English. Acceptable qualifications for entry are:

* A degree which you studied in English.
* Heriot-Watt University's Foundation English Programme - Grade C (Grade B for postgraduate study in the School of Management and Languages).
* TOEFL 577 (233 in the computerised test or 90 in the internet-based test). This applies to courses in the School of Life Sciences, School of Management and Languages, School of the Built Environment, School of Textiles and Design, School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences, and Institute of Petroleum Engineering.
* TOEFL 550 (213 in the computerised test or 80 in the internet-based test). This applies to courses in the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences only.
* IELTS 6.5.
* Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency (CPE) Grade C.
