Marine Technology Educational Consortium (MTEC) is a collaboration of six UK universities – Heriot-Watt, Glasgow, Southampton, Newcastle, Strathclyde and UCL. These institutions are recognised by the industry for their excellence in marine technology education and research.
MTEC is now offering an EPSRC Masters Training Package in Marine Technology. MSc and Diploma degree programmes will be available in seven technology areas, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Marine Technology will also be available. *Each individual module will be offered as a stand-alone CPD module.
The aim of each module is to teach new and emerging marine related technologies together with the business and management applications, providing graduates with advanced technical and managerial techniques needed to enhance innovation and competitiveness.
This is an innovative training programme which has been designed to meet the needs of graduates working in the marine industry. Modules will be delivered by a combination of distance learning material and one week intensive 'schools' to minimise disruption to the student and their employer. For each module, there will be pre-school preparation and post-school assignments. Project work for the MSc and Diploma will be directly linked to the graduate's work-based responsibilities.
The programme has been designed in conjunction with leading marine companies, The Institute of Marine Engineers and The Royal Institution of Naval Architects. The MSc has been approved as a 'Matching Section' by IMarE and RINA.

Contents

This innovative flexible training programme offers a range of modules which can be combined to achieve degree awards.

Modules are delivered by a combination of distance learning material and one week intensive 'schools'. Each module has a credit rating of 10 points and requires 100 hours study time. For each module, there will be pre-school preparation and post school assignments.

MSc and Postgraduate Diploma degree awards are available in seven technology areas (see the Technology section ) and a Postgraduate Certificate is also available. For those undertaking an MSc or Postgraduate Diploma, an industrially based project must be completed.

Each individual module is offered as a stand alone Continuing Professional Development module which may be suitable for those requiring specific subject training. All modules are approved as CPD by the Institute of Marine Engineers and the Royal Institution of Naval Architects.

Each module will have a credit rating of 10 points and requires 100 hours study time to complete.

In addition, students taking the General MSc programme in collaboration with Rolls Royce can choose up to three modules from those offered by the Rolls Royce Early Engineering Professional Development Scheme. These are: Holistic Gas Turbines; Lean Thinking for Continuous Business Improvement; the Product Definition Process, and Excellence Through Programme Management.

Pre-school material - this will normally require 50 hours of study and will enable students to revise and review pre-requisite material so that the intensive school can be run efficiently and effectively.

One week school - this will have an approximate contact time of 35 hours and will include a range of lectures, case studies, tutorials, presentations, discussions and visits. Academic and industrial tutors will be involved in the delivery of the school.
Post school material - this will require 15 hours of study time and will involve completion of a post-school assignment. This will consolidate the module learning.
Project - A 40 credit project is required to complete the Postgraduate Diploma and an 80 credit project for the MSc programme. The project will address a problem or issue related to the student's organisation and be multi-disciplinary in nature to allow the application of a wide range of skills and knowledge.

Examples of potential projects include:

Optimisation of energy in central cooling water systems of large tankers.

Investigation into the advantages and disadvantages of installing gas turbine propulsion in a new cruise ship.
