Course structure
Students do preparatory reading for weekly seminars, which offer opportunities for discussion. They may also be asked to present their ideas formally to fellow students. In addition, students are expected to work independently, reading around their subject, identifying relevant areas for further enquiry, and undertaking a small-scale research study. Students are offered support through individual tutorials and the university's online virtual learning environment studentcentral.

Areas of study
An introductory module helps develop critical reading. Three modules examine various aspects of applied linguistics, including pedagogic grammar, second language acquisition and varieties of English. A further module examines and evaluates language teaching materials and curricula in relation to specific contexts. Students choose two further option modules from a range of topics: using digital media in teaching, language teacher development, materials design and production, varieties of English. Participants also attend a series of seminars on research methods and carry out a piece of original research for the dissertation.
