Overview A microsystem is a miniaturised engineering system whose main functions include actuation, sensing, as well as electronic information processing. Microsystems are widely used in the latest IT and telecommunications hardware, advanced medical devices, and various biomedical and biotechnological fields.
Currently microsystems technology, also known as microengineering or microsystems engineering, is expanding rapidly, as is the demand for qualified engineers with specialist training. To satisfy such a growing industrial demand, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) in the UK, provided funding to MISEC (Micro Systems Engineering Centre) at Heriot-Watt University in 1992 and again in 1995 to develop the MSc course in Microsystems Engineering, to provide specialist training at Masters level. The course has recently been modified to incorporate new developments in the field and is being offered under the name of MSc in Microsystems with Photonics.
The EPSRC also provides substantial funding for Engineering Doctorates to be carried out at Heriot-Watt in the area of Microsystems and already some students are being sponsored by companies such as NCR, National Semiconductor and Philips in order to undertake such training.

Applicants require a First or Second Class Honours degree, or its overseas equivalent, in a numerate, scientific or design orientated discipline. Candidates not holding First or Second Class Honours degrees may, under certain circumstances, be admitted to the Diploma course. If their examination performance is satisfactory, they may then be recommended for transfer to MSc.
Applicants for whom English is not their first language and who do not already hold a degree in which the teaching was in English must satisfy the university minimum requirements for competence in English. These are TOEFL 213 points (550 points on the old scale); IELTS at grade 6.0 or Cambridge Proficiency Certificate of English grade C.
