These courses are for experienced, dynamic health professionals wanting to advance their current roles in practice.
The programme is diverse enough to accommodate professionals from a wide range of backgrounds and specific enough to provide an individualised programme of academic professional development. The courses are applicable to health professionals working in clinical care, management and education.
The courses are part of a flexible programme which allows students to select from over 100 modules (some of which are online), provided by our Schools of Nursing and Midwifery, Health Professions, and Applied Social Sciences, and the Institute of Postgraduate Medicine.
This course is for you if you want to develop and modernise your practice by:
- studying three core modules designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills to, develop new roles, enable you to carry out work-based learning projects, and develop your research abilities
- having choice in the modules you select in order to reflect your professional and personal development plans
- networking with other health professions.
Career and progression opportunities
The strong emphasis on linking academic with practice development has resulted in graduates of this course developing consultant roles in their professions, moving into lecturer practitioner roles and developing integrated management-clinical roles.
Contents
Course structure
All participants study three core modules and select a further three options. Modules are available in extensive (over 13 weeks), intensive (over five days) or online study modes. Any combination of these modes of study is available, providing students with flexible learning opportunities.
The Work-based Learning module requires attendance at an introduction day and up to five two-hour action-learning sets spread over the two semesters. This module can also be taken online. Please note that practitioners must have access to clinical work to complete this module.
Individual modules may also be studied independently for personal or professional development, and can be put towards an award at a later date.
The degree is also offered with an education route and involves teaching for four hours per week during each education module. An alternative management route consists of three modules which [i]may[/i] include a short residential component and project.

Degree and/or experience:
Normally relevant first degree plus appropriate professional qualifications and at least two years post-professional-qualification experience. Accreditation of prior learning available, where appropriate. Employees of NHS Trusts involved in education contracts with the university may be eligible to undertake some modules through these contracts. Other candidates able to demonstrate potential to work at postgraduate level are considered.
