The Personnel and Development MSc course develops a professional understanding of people management. It is a course for current and aspiring HR specialists and line managers who are interested in the management and development of people.
The masters can be achieved by part-time study (afternoon and evening day release) over three academic years. The postgraduate diploma in Personnel and Development can be achieved by the two year fast-track route. Although mainly intended for people in work it is also suitable for individuals who would like to return to work after a career break or for those who are looking for a career change
Career and progression opportunities
Once students have qualified for CIPD membership, they can apply for upgrading to Chartered Member or Chartered Fellow direct to the CIPD.

* Students who intend to exit with the postgraduate diploma will take the Investigating a Business Issue from a Human Resource Perspective module but students who intend to progress to the final year of the masters programme and undertake a professional project will take the Researching Human Resources module.
Successful completion of all elements leads to the award of postgraduate diploma and CIPD membership.

For entry to MA Year 1 candidates require a first degree, Level 6 (NQF)/H (FHEQ)/NVQ4 equivalent qualifications, CIPD Certificate of Personnel Practice (CPP), CIPD Certificate in Training Practice (CTP), or appropriate prior learning and experience. All candidates are expected to have, or be looking for, work in the HR field. Exceptionally, candidates without such work experience, but looking to enter the HR profession, could be accepted provided they have a first degree. Line managers with extensive "people management" needs would also be considered.
For non-native speakers of English: IELTS 6.5 overall, 6.0 in writing.
All candidates receive an admissions interview, and will be required to supply two references.
Candidates may be asked to complete and achieve a reasonable standard in an entry assignment.
MA Year 2
Direct entry to MA Year 2 is possible for eligible candidates and will be considered on an individual basis. If you think you may be eligible for direct entry, please contact the Course Leader.
Applications from MBA graduates especially welcome.
MA Year 3
Direct entry to MA Year 3 is possible for candidates who have achieved graduate membership of the CIPD by an education route.
Selection criteria
The selection of candidates is based upon the following criteria: academic ability; ability to cope with the course and see it through to a successful conclusion; and motivation to study Personnel and Development.
