The challenge faced by built environment professionals today, from the highest level of international cooperation right down to the neighbourhood, is to build more sustainable communities through development which integrates economic, social and environmental goals. This challenge sets the agenda for the Urban Studies discipline. The School is a leading provider of education and research in property economics, spatial planning and housing policy. At postgraduate level the discipline offers a range of professionally accredited postgraduate degrees in Housing, Planning and Real Estate.

These programmes equip students with the specialist knowledge, skills and attitudes you need to contribute through your chosen field to making better places in which to live, work, rest and play. But that goal also needs mutual understanding between the professions and our cross-disciplinary learning style will help students acquire that. Our active professional and research links with industry and government ensure that your education will be relevant, up-to-date, and grounded in the real world. We offer an outstanding record of graduate employment in the UK, and students will have the chance to benefit from our international links.

Professionals working in the real estate investment market face many challenges. The global nature of the property market, rapid developments in research tools and business practice, new competition from those operating in the broader investment markets and the development of alternatives to direct property investment all add new dimensions to the role of the property professional in this field. On completion of this programme graduates will be able to:

· Convey knowledge and understanding of, and apply specialist skills within, scientific, technical and business areas of landed property, and real estate investment.

· Draw upon a sound foundation of knowledge and understanding of the practices and procedures of surveying and the property industry.

· Demonstrate sophisticated intellectual and research skills proficient for a professional career.

· Evaluate complex problems and formulate original ideas and proposals relevant to the real estate investment market.

· Appreciate the values, ethics, responsibilities and rules governing professional general practice surveying, and the need for professional integrity when advising clients.
