The first of its kind in the UK, this course enables participants to break into the fast-moving world of digital television. Not a traditional television production course, students focus on developing and managing the creation of interactive programmes, products and services delivered via broadcast digital television (terrestrial, satellite, cable and broadband) and other interactive media. The modules cover the broad range of subjects (design, technology, management and business) needed to understand the industry.
The course was developed in collaboration with Victoria Real, a digital media company with an international reputation, now a part of Endemol. Representatives from prominent television organisations were involved in its development, including; the BBC, Channel 5, Channel Four, Hewlett Packard, Liberate Technologies, Norwich Union, OpenTV UK, Telewest Broadband, and leading independent consultants.
Career and progression opportunities
Graduates have found positions as researchers and production assistants (first rung on the career ladder leading to producer posts) in interactive television production at the BBC. Other companies employing graduates in project management and production roles include: BSkyB, Channel 4, Turner Television, Chellomedia and the Civil Service.
Course structure
The taught modules are delivered in blocks that are multiples of three weeks. They typically consist of preparatory activity, an intensive teaching period, and a period for completing assessed work.
Students are expected to put in an average of 40 hours per week. During the final three months of the full-time course, the major project may be carried out in an external organisation.
Students have access to a laboratory containing a range of interactive TV devices and services. A fully-equipped professional television studio and editing suite is also available.
Areas of study
Ten taught modules cover subjects needed to understand the industry. Students also develop their own production ideas up to the stage of a professional pitch to a commissioning executive.
