The specialisation in Book and Digital Media Studies focuses on the dynamic process of the transmission of knowledge and information through analogue (print) and electronic (internet) media.
You study both the historical development, from Gutenberg to Gates, and the modern practice of textual communication within its societal and technological context. Much attention is given to the far-reaching consequences of the digital revolution for the world of the book. The programme has three main points of focus: Digital access to cultural heritage History of the book Publishing Studies The unique character of this MA programme draws students from all over the world.
In the fall semester the programme offers a combination of four core courses and one elective. The elective-which you select from three options-helps to prepare you for the two specialisation courses chosen in the spring semester out of three alternatives: Book History, Publishing Studies and Digital Access to Cultural Heritage. At the end of the year you will be required to produce a 15,000-word thesis.
Throughout the academic year a number of excursions are undertaken. You will have the opportunity to visit such places as the Plantin-Moretus Museum in Antwerp, the Frankfurt Book Fair, the Media Park in Hilversum as well as a number of publishing companies. The department also offers an exchange programme with a variety of other European universities.
The aim of the programme is to ensure you have an in-depth knowledge of the history and modern practice of text transmission-manuscripts, printing and recent digital developments. You will also graduate with detailed knowledge of all relevant issues and academic skills and insights regarding the field of book studies.
This master's programme offers the following specialisations:
Anyone with a Master´s degree can in principle apply for a PhD-track. Graduates from the Book and Byte programme can apply to be admitted to the Textual transmission and textual editing specialisation of the MPhil in Literature.
This programme has a workload of 60 ECTS.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
