This course is designed for HPC-registered biomedical scientists who wish to undertake part-time study towards a masters qualification in biomedical science. The programme draws upon Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) Specialist Portfolios for the design of credit-rated modules in the professional disciplines of medical microbiology, histopathology, clinical chemistry or haematology and transfusion science.

These are combined with modules in biomedical laboratory management and applied molecular biology and a laboratory-based research project to form a coherent and specialist discipline-centred part-time route for pathology service employees holding appropriate entry qualifications.

The course development has been informed by consultation with senior managers, laboratory managers and training staff from the NHS biomedical science profession. There is a significant element of work-related learning, with discipline-specific subjects supported by contributions from practising senior pathology and clinical staff.

During the programme students expand their knowledge and skills in diagnostic laboratory medicine, learn to apply these to clinical diagnosis, laboratory management and research, and develop as reflective practitioners. It is anticipated to be attractive to NHS Pathology Service employees embarking on the IBMS Specialist Portfolio, though the course has been designed to provide flexibility for students and the pattern of study can fit in with a variety of personal and professional circumstances.

For example, it is possible to take the pathology discipline-specific modules alone, while training for the IBMS Specialist Diploma and qualify for a postgraduate certificate; taking additional modules can lead to a postgraduate diploma, while completion of a research project is required for an MSc. Also, as the specialist discipline modules are awarded independently from the IBMS qualification, the course is available to biomedical scientists who do not require the Specialist Portfolio, eg where an IBMS 'logbook' qualification has already been gained. The MSc qualification is normally achieved after three years of part-time study, although a two-year part-time route is also available.


Contents

Course structure
Attendance at the university will be for a maximum of one day a week and, while the pattern of teaching contact varies over the programme, a typical week consists of three hours teaching contact and nine hours student-centred learning (eg directed reading and assessment preparation). Teaching contact consists of lectures, seminars, action learning sets and workshops. Assessment methods vary between modules; all contain a significant component of coursework such as case-studies, essays, presentations and reflective evaluation. Some modules have examination components such as interim tests and end of module exams.

Areas of study
Depending on the programme chosen, students following the full MSc programme take two year-long work-related modules in the pathology discipline subjects of Haematology and Transfusion Science, Medical Microbiology, Cellular Pathology or Clinical Biochemistry. Lectures, seminar and workshop are based at the university, and students can use work-based practice and experiences to support the learning programme. This is supplemented by small group action-learning sets across the discipline routes to discuss and plan progress towards module and IBMS Portfolio completion. Taken alongside these are core modules in Biomedical Laboratory Management and Applied Molecular Biology. Students can also choose an option in a special topic selected from a range available in the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences; examples include Diabetes, Biomedical Statistics, and Oxidative Stress and Human Disease. Students focus on research methods and project design through a research methods module, and this includes preparation for the research project module undertaken taken in the final year of the programme. The project is based on the student's specialist discipline and includes work conducted in the pathology laboratory workplace.

Degree and/or experience: Entrants normally required to have a BSc(Hons) Biomedical Sciences or similar subject area; entrants must be HPC Registrant Biomedical Scientists and employed by a collaborating NHS Pathology Service Laboratory.
