High quality postgraduate training in methods and practice of research with transferable skills not normally offered in conventional taught MSc courses.
This masters course is an integrated, industrially-focused, research training programme for students wishing to develop their research skills in the fields of pharmaceutical and/or biomedical sciences.
Graduates are equipped with a well-rounded, laboratory-based research training and the necessary transferable skills and are fully prepared for employment within the pharmaceutical and biomedical sciences industries, and also for further academic study.
The objective of the course is to develop the skills and the knowledge of graduates enabling them to carry out research in a manner that maximises their personal and professional potential and that will achieve the greatest benefits for the organisations employing them.
Throughout the course students have the opportunity, with guidance from us, to assess their suitability for a career in industry or further research training. The research project provides a real intellectual challenge and enables the student to demonstrate creativity and initiative. The course is structured to include a significant research component for at least 50 per cent of the working year. A series of supporting taught courses make up the rest of the working year.
Career and progression opportunities
The M.Res in provides a foundation for careers in research, in industry, the public sector or the academic world. Course provides a well-rounded, practical research based training, plus the necessary transferable skills to prepare graduates for employment.
Course structure
The course provides a flexible opportunity to obtain high level research based training combined with the development of academic and professional skills. The particular focus of the course is set by the students' choice of research project topic, which also determines the topics studied in the modules. Because of this the exact nature of the course is to some extent individual to each student.
The core Research Methodologies module lies at the heart of the MRes and equips students with a fundamental understanding of the research process across a wide and dynamic range of disciplines.
The extended research project is the opportunity for cutting-edge research in a relevant area. Additional elements of the course provide an integrated, employment-focused, research training programme for students wishing to develop their research skills within pharmaceutical and/or biomedical sciences. The choices of subject-specific modules available provide opportunities to study aspects of molecular biology and techniques in advanced microscopy.
Areas of study
Graduates are equipped to carry out research in a manner that maximises both their own personal and professional potential, and the benefits for their future employers.
In particular, they gain a critical appreciation of the stages of the research process; extensive training in pharmaceutical and/or biomedical research methodology; the capacity to design and undertake a substantial research project; awareness of the specialist techniques appropriate to their research subject; the ability to provide a rationale for the selection of specialist analytical techniques; and a contextualised understanding of the potential relevance of scientific research to industry and the world of business.
