Besides the Greek and Latin languages, the range of subjects you can study in this specialisation includes studies on Ancient History, Ancient Philosophy, Papyrology and Neo- Latin.
The academic staff responsible for these courses are internationally renowned for their research work. The result is a master's programme which provides you with a comprehensive view of the classical world, while defining the significance it still has for modern society. This programme qualifies you for the Teacher-training programme in Classics.
Specialisations
The MA in Classics offers the choice of two specialisations-Literature or Linguistics. Both tracks make use of an integrated and interdisciplinary approach to the study of the languages and the cultural-historical subjects, enabling you to concentrate on areas outside of your immediate field of study.
Specialisation: Linguistics
This specialisation focuses on linguistic and formal aspects to examine ancient textual sources. You will concentrate on Syntax (the use of aspect and modes, particles), Pragmatics and Discourse Analysis (examining communication strategies and rhetoric for the transmission of information) and reflection on language use in antiquity. Please use the menu on the right hand side to view the other specialisations of this programme.
Specialisation: Literature
Within this specialisation you will focus on the study of ancient textual sources, primarily on their content. You will cover a wide array of topics (depending on the courses you choose), including Interpretation, Genre, Nachleben, Literary Criticism in Antiquity and Intertextuality.
For those whose ambition it is to pursue an academic career, a PhD track is the next step. Anyone with a Master´s degree can in principle apply for a PhD track. However, students with a particular interest in an academic career are advised to choose an MPhil programme (for example the MPhil in Literature, with its specialisation `Classics and Classical Civilization´), since these programmes prepare directly for research at PhD level. The central component of the individual PhD track consists of carrying out a research project under expert supervision, and writing a dissertation reporting on this research. PhD students are directly associated with a research institute. In addition, they follow a number of courses, some of which are offered by the relevant national research school.
Classics has its own national research school, OIKOS, that organises a number of courses for PhD students in the area of Graeco-Roman Antiquity. OIKOS stimulates and coordinates research efforts in the same area, and promotes the formation of an international network of researchers. The procedure for admission to the PhD track is conducted through job applications.
This programme has a workload of 60 ECTS.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
